Artist Statement

Three photographs from a series that explore existentialism and its predecessor, essentialism. I have been interested in the functions of different objects and the environment they are placed in, the interactions between contrasting materials and their relationship with autonomy and human consciousness.

Bag (2020) is a series of five photographs depicting the behaviour of a bin liner filled with water existing within a number of domestic spaces. The fragile plastic manipulates around the household structures as a metaphor of the human compulsion to search for meaning in a world that does not contain objective truths. Existentialist theory suggests that an individual’s purpose (essence) can only be determined by their own choices.

If you are to consider existentialist ideals, you can interpret my work however you wish. That is your truth, just as much as this is mine.
