Artist Statement

I have always been intrigued by the thingness of things, how an object reacts to the world around it, and the philosophy of being a consumer. Observing my own habits and considering what I think are the commodities in my own life, I have been able to highlight why I have such an interest in sculpture as I like to give objects a second chance at life. I found that I admire second-hand things more: books, jewellery, objects: as they have had a life before they have entered my own.

The series Human Habitat, 2020 explores the transition of working with space to place with marrying sculpture and drawing, by photographing miniature sculptures of household found objects, in a purposely designed place, and then digitally enhancing the images on photoshop in a painterly style. Creating a narrative on the metaphysical and elemental commodities we need as humans to stay sane. This idea came from wanting to design an oasis from the comfort of my own home. I developed the works to be digital paintings after my frustration of working with the physical limitations of sculpture and discovering that fantasy is possible through drawing. The physics of sculpture does not exist in painting.
