Artist Statement
Flicking through the zine, you are greeted by an array of colours, imagery and
words – each forming their own piece of art. As you stare, each page becomes
a tool for the imagination, as some of the pieces invite you to think deeper
into their wider social context. Some are collages, made entirely of vintage,
childlike innocence; here, those sweet little rabbits, kittens or Kewpies
stare back at you. But that innocence you see is not so sweet because as you
stare just a little longer, the eyes of those friendly faces are an eerie
reminder of today’s political climate. Some may force you to question its
meaning, some may offend, and some may even induce humour. Some are LOUD,
AGGRESSIVE, AND SICKLY SWEET.
Inspired by the feminist movement of the 90s entitled Riot Grrrl, this zine
is a set of artworks by yours truly, all serving to address the personal and
the political, blurring boundaries between typography and imagery and what we
consider ‘art’. The zine itself stands alone as an A5 piece of artwork – but
choosing to delve inside and explore its contents functions much like a
collaborative installation. A zine is to be consumed, to be read and passed
around among fellow feminists. My practise is intimate and explicit – but what
you see before you is the story of a bedroom artist.
The aim of this zine – and my practice as a whole – is to confidently express
my experiences and validate others who may have endured similar. It also exists
as a space to for others to express themselves freely without judgement, and
to be distributed among other likeminded individuals as proof that zine culture
is very much alive.
