Isolation #2

Artist statement

Mental health and isolation are something that often goes hand in hand. But what happens when you can’t escape that isolation, even if you wanted to, because the whole world has come to a standstill?

My work explores the isolation felt by those struggling with mental health, and how an individual can find comfort through medication, through interactive sculptural plush toys in the shapes of pill capsules and tablets captured through photographs. The plush toys are a physical embodiment of the constant need to remember to take my medication, no matter if I feel good or bad on that day, and how dealing with my mental health is a constant in my day-to-day life.

Expressing my own experience with mental health through my work is important, as my mental illness is a part of me and to truly put my all into my art, I must also include that part of myself. I hope people will feel amused, enlightened and confused by my work, but most of all find a connection with it. The plush toys are not just for me, they are for everyone to enjoy and find comfort in.
