Artist Statement

My artwork focuses on humour using pop art projection: vibrant in presentation and very much “in your face” shock value. Works produced are mainly based on my personal experiences growing up in a working-class environment; paying special attention to the tricky relationship I had/have with my mother. The aim of creating these works is to provoke a response of familiarity and/or feelings of nostalgia for the audience. From sculpture, digital image and mock-up commercial wall art,  I always find myself taking iconic children’s tv characters from my generation and setting them a stage for an entirely different purpose - they’re no longer the sweet, innocent and comfort creatures of our childhood but instead they’ve grown up alongside us and endured the same grueling challenges we’ve had to face from a sketchy society and has, in turn, created a new perspective.

The message of “everyone must grow up at some point or another” is a staple response from my autobiographical work; when I often find myself in times of hardship I resort to humour as a way of masking my real emotions. So as much as my work makes people laugh, invites them in with the approachable, fun-loving children’s television characters and pop art presentation, there is always an underlying damp joke clutching at the difficult experiences of my life and perhaps everyone else’s too and creating the effects of familiarity for our generation (kids built in the noughties).
