Artist Statement
I am a visual artist who explores pattern in language through coding the English alphabet. Language is what connects us. Language is what divides us. Language presents patterns and rhythms. Language is something we do not think about often. What happens if language is universal? Art is universal. Mathematics is universal. Consider the implications of a combination of the three. A language that is only written and read, not spoken. Can be felt with texture. A new creative way to communicate.
Using Morse code and Braille as influences for this new alphabet and communication device, Equidistance (2019), only consists of circles, sections of circles or straight lines. Selfish (2019) introduces tension into the work with the juxtaposition of strict geometric shapes and textured paint application, alongside the harsh edges of plastic acrylic and the fluid motions in which they move whilst suspended from the ceiling and moving with air flow.
Whilst there are over 7000 langauges already in existence, I believe a new universal language could bring people together in order to make communication more succinct. Designing my own functional type called Equidistance (2019) and putting it through testing with different process’. Channeling Equidistance through photography with Inside (2020), painting with This is a Zebra (2020), digital illustration with Listen Silent (2020), concrete poetry with Catastrophe (2020) and sculpture with Selfish (2019), it has proven it is robus and flexible, but consistent throughout. All of the works stem from A-Z (2019) but have their own identity.
