Artist Statement
My practice investigates the impact of Instagram on our real-life experiences of art galleries and self-image. Derived from my own experience with modern-day internet culture, I aim to visually suggest the dangers of self-image distortion caused by excessive use of online platforms. Social media is saturated with images that viewers only usually see for a matter of seconds before scrolling past onto the next. I aim to represent this content, taking the images out of their usual scrollable frame and into a material form that can be reflected upon, critiqued and acknowledged by its audience.
To achieve this, I use a combination of digital collage, photography and existing imagery available on Instagram, before digitally printing my work. I also produce charcoal drawings to explore the effects of digital imagery being reproduced authentically by hand. I work with technology that has faults within it - this includes corrupted SD cards or iPhones displaying only a cropped perspective of an image.
My work acts as a mirror to its audience by representing everyday visual content in a way that reframes it as an opportunity for reflection. Social media platforms provide a stage for one to stand on, and I aim to allow the people immersed in Instagram culture to step off the stage and critique their relationship with it.
