Artist Statement

I work with film photography to document my experiences and explore how patterns within social and personal history repeat themselves. Time, space and photography work together in my practice to create images that represent my life and help me to navigate my artistic career and place myself within an artistic context.

The above passions, interests and media come together in my work The Off Cut (2020) in which the viewer is confronted by two large mysterious, grainy, scratched soft black film photographs printed on a thick textured paper featuring a small light source on each one. They are invited to experience the uncertainty, confusion and isolation that comes with my experiences as a lesbian and to think about challenging the hyper-visibility that is so prevalent in queer culture. I strongly align myself with artists like Catherine Opie, Rafael Perez Evans, Zadie Xa, Nan Goldin, Jasleen Kaur and Babeworld 3000 and my practice reflects what I feel is a relevant, contemporary and urgent way of making, thinking about, sharing and writing about art.

I curate a virtual art gallery on Instagram aimed at underrepresented groups of people to create a space for the artists to show their work. Using social media and being part of an online community is the most effective way to amplify our voices. The account includes work by artists Beth Kweeday, Libby Howarth, Oliver Vizard, Rebecca Orr and Georgia Nielson.
