Artist Statement

I make moving image work that reflects on themes such as masculinity and male stereotypes, touching upon politics, fatherhood and patriarchy within the family. Previously I have produced works addressing subjects such as Period Poverty, the Plastic Pandemic and cultural ideas about human bodily ‘imperfections’. My practice always revolves around themes that are specifically personal to me: my family members and their hobbies are the focus of my latest films. My most recent body of work originally revolved around the idea of purely capturing journeys, taken by my family, in various army vehicles that my Dad collects and does up as a hobby. Although the films include such out of the ordinary vehicles, these heavily patriotic vehicles have always been a part of mine and my family's everyday life, which I wanted to show through the medium of film.

I made repeated recordings which framed my work in terms of the themes I wanted to highlight, such as fatherhood and patriarchy; they give a biographical insight into the male influences in my life that surround these vehicles. I feel the need to leave all my films as unedited as possible to show how these male characters act and converse with each other. As well as the sound of people talking, there is also the, unedited, constant noise of the engine, which always reminds you that these films were taken inside machines, unlike modern day noiseless cars – for me their noise highlights how far technology has evolved.
