Artist Statement

“Space toys still hold the promise of a brighter future, that final frontier which will forever tantalize kids and adults alike.”

 

Through the eyes of a child, toys capture their imagination as they create an emotional connection with them through play and companionship. As we grow older, realities of our changing world call for us to rely on our own heroes. Therefore, we, as adults, can go back to that state of childhood play, and use toys to face the unknown. 

 

However, franchises use this emotional attachment to market toys to pull on the heartstrings of the consumer. 

 

Using the idea of toyetic, my work mirrors the stages of physical merchandise becoming a developed, expressive character. This is then used as an ersatz for human beings, as in times of uncertainty; we become vulnerable and ask for our own heroes to face the unknown for us.
