Artist Statement

Dear x, 

 

I sit on my carpeted floor, drinking coffee, trying to map my mind onto some paper I found at the bottom of your work bag. My sketchbook is filled with our faces and scribbles of words you’ve said that I know would otherwise be forgotten. My practice has taken a detour because of you. My work is now completely designed around the way you look, the way you make me feel, and the glaze in your eyes that only I can see. 

 

I love the way your glasses slide down your nose when you’re 300 pages deep into a crime novel. I love the way you dance with our cat on a morning, even though she just wants to nap and be left alone. I love the way your drunken homemade cookies turned out at 3am, burnt and under-cooked inside. I capture these moments with you, trapping them inside polaroid for us to keep forever. These are tokens of us. 

 

I’d like to thank you for making my practice so special. Without you, my work would feel empty and insignificant. If you often feel my stare piercing the back of your head, now you know why. It’s just another day at the office…
